The 2017 growing season overall exhibited classic wine country weather. The year began with abundant rainfall, followed by a mild Spring resulting in a longer flowering period with little shatter (mean we got nice full grape clusters). A Labor Day weekend heatwave kicked harvest into high gear, then cool weather allowed sugar levels to return to normal. By September 25th all of our grapes had been harvested and we put the last wines to barrel on October 5th. When fierce winds fueled an unprecedented firestorm starting on October 8 (which happens to be my birthday), our 2017 babies were already resting peacefully in barrels. The 2017 wines should not be defined by the Firestorms, but as a vintage of finesse, great complexity of flavor and incredible elegance, which is exactly what Waugh strives for.

Balancing lush notes of dark fruits against delicate hints of tea and chocolate, this is a velvety mouthful of wine. Rich aromas and flavors of blueberry and chocolate are complemented by vanilla and cocoa tones that linger.
